President Obama's Executive Action on Deportation

Date- November 21, 2014

President Obama fulfilled a promise he made earlier in 2014 to change his policy on immigration if Congress did not pass a comprehensive Immigration Reform Law.  He announced an executive order last Thursday, which outlines new standards on deportation.  President Obama said that deportations would focus on "felons, not families. Criminals, not children. Gang members, not a mom who’s working hard to provide for her kids. We’ll prioritize, just like law enforcement does every day."  Specifically, parents of U.S. citizens and green card holders would be protected.  One immigration group estimates that 3.7 million people would fall into this category.  In addition, the age restriction on those that qualify as Dreamers, minors brought to the country illegally, will be eliminated.  This should result in 290,000 more people being allowed to stay without fear of deportation as long as they remain upstanding citizens.  Republicans were critical of Obama before he announced his plan as this issue partially represents the struggle for the Latino vote, a key factor as politicians eye the 2016 presidential race.

Questions-
What do you think the effects of this action will be?
What are the reasons Obama is doing this now?

  1. What do you think the effects of this action will be?
    - If his plans fall through, Obama will focus on the deportation of illegal criminals living in the U.S rather than skilled workers that can benefit the economy. He may also grant amnesty to the women and children who cross the border to better their lives.

What are the reasons Obama is doing this now?
    - Obama is doing this now in order to gain Democratic vote. This is a strategy to prevent congress from becoming dominated by the Republican Party.

    1. Most people who are against any form of amnesty or immigration reform talk about "securing the border." As a result, Obama and those that favor reform always exclude anyone who has crossed the border recently. Last, this action does not provide any guaranteed long term status changes. As an executive action, this policy could be changed by the next executive (president).

  2. I think the effects of this action will be that streets will be cleaner with less criminal immigrants and more immigrants trying to get jobs or create jobs. The reason why Obama is doing this is to get the Latino vote for the election of 2016.

    1. Good thought on the Latino vote, which is so important for the 2016 election. As for other effects, it should make it easier for some workers to feel more secure, but it will be interesting to see how more conservative states deal with the fact the federal government is not going to "prioritize" deportations of certain individuals. For example, Alabama still has a law that requires people to prove their citizenship when renting an apartment. Bottom line - the system is still dysfunctional. It will be interesting to see if the Republican controlled Congress will attempt to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill (maybe in 2016 as they nominate a Latino vice-presidential candidate...It's always POLITICS!)

  3. The effects will be that moms wont be afraid to get up early in the morning and go to work in fear that some one might take her away or better yet her kids. Parents or anyone illegal look for work that pays under the table, they risk their lives every single day just so they can put food on the table, and that there kids could have a better live and future ahead of them.

  4. i believe that Obama is doing a good thing but there is going to be people that will try to chance people opinion with the matter by saying what he doing is letting the immigrants take the american people job. the truth of the matter is that he giving people a chance to do something with there life and to open the eye of the work force saying that these people have been here for a while and are not afraid to work the job that other people neglect.

  5. I believe that what Obama is doing will be good for the immigrants that are living here. Not only isl this effect the future of immigrants, but will help them live everyday easier. People will be able to go to work not having to worry about getting deported. This will help immigrants and their families be happier and live a better life.
