House Republicans Want to Change 2008 Deportation Law

Date - July 29, 2014

Summary - Republicans in the House introduced a bill that would change a 2008 law that allowed illegal immigrant children not from Canada and Mexico a legal hearing.  The 2008 law was part of an attempt to protect youth involved in sex trafficking.  Democrats have asked for more money to deal with the crisis, but 2/3rds of Americans support the idea of sending children back to Central America more quickly.  In fact,  President Obama initially supported the idea of changing the law, but was quickly convinced by immigrants' rights groups to not openly support drastic changes.  Democrats focus their criticism on the inability of Republicans in the House to pass Immigration Reform that would offer a path to citizenship.  One interesting issue is that smugglers have convinced many immigrants that the 2008 law will allow children the time to establish a foothold in the country.  President Obama does have some power as president to increase or decrease deportations and is under pressure from both sides.

Question - What are the main ideas of Republicans and Democrats on the immigration crisis?

  1. Democrats want to provide greater opportunity for immigrants to gain citizenship. Republicans believe trials involving immigrants should be way faster which is also speeding up the deportation process. The federal government should focus more on youth immigrants because of the increase in youth sex trafficking.

  2. Most Americans still support a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. Democrats do not want to upset immigrant rights activists and lose voters/voters. However, Republicans want to tighten and control borders to regulate the American population. I believe we should have stricter laws but not cut off refugees right away, perhaps we can modify the exceptions and conditions. source washington times

  3. Republicans want control over who enters the country and are concerned with population issues. Democrats want immigrants to have a path to become a citizen, possibly so they would vote for their party. My opinion is that we should meet somewhere in the middle, increase immigration laws and allow everyone who has already entered the United States to have equal opportunities as Americans.

    1. I agree democrats do not just welcome immigrants into their homes out of the goodness of their hearts, they want to boost their party's votes by having minority groups on their side. Though it is a catch, I believe they should treat all incomers as Floridians treat Cubans with the "Wet Feet, Dry Feet" policy and allow them to reside as U.S. citizens. Democrats will undoubtedly be the most favored party in the U.S. I think it's immoral to live in a country that has so much to offer yet refuses to give if you don't have U.S. residency. We should try our best to better the lives of others instead of sending them back to the terrors or hardships they were running from.

  4. The Republicans want to increase the speed of deportation towards immigrants. The Democrats would like to support the immigrants although the republicans do not agree. I believe we should help the immigrants become citizens in the United States because were all human beings and we all deserve a home.

  5. Morals intervene when Democrats make a decision. Republicans go more on the wealthy side. My point is, republicans are a bit cruel when deporting children and democrats want to make it less of an offense by having hearings. I don't think giving legal status to children is the answer. One thing, Hispanics will be the majority in the US which will affect our votes. Children are coming from their countries because of gangs. The US should give political aid to Central America and be hard on the government since the government is corrupt.

    1. The Hispanic population is increasing, it will never be the majority (more than half) of the US, but is already the largest group in California and will be the largest group soon in Texas. When the Hispanic population participates more in elections (higher voter turnout), things will change.

    2. I agree with the fact that the federal government should turn their focus mainly yo youth immigrants. Since democrats and republicans fail to agree on deportation laws, they need to meet in the middle and I believe that is the youth. There should be more opportunities for children to be able to gain citizenship. After all, it is stated in the declaration of independence that all people be granted the basic rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of hapiness. The least the republicans can do is provide youth immigrants a more productive future rather than being lured into gangs or sex trafficking which is highly common with children. Our country should still abide by the terms of the declaration of independence just how our founding fathers did.

  6. Democrats focus their criticism on the inability of the Republicans in the House to pass Immigration Reform that would offer a path to citizenship. Because of the fact that President Obama is a democrat he has control to increase or decrease the amount of deportation that happens to immigrants. I think that immigrants should have the rights to become american citizens because every human should have equal rights.

  7. democrats have asked for more money to help immigrants but 2/3rds of the people say no. Republicans want to speed up the process of deportation. I think we should help the immigrants beacuse every one immigrated from europe to the colonies and started the U.S.

  8. What I understood from reading the blog is Republicans want to send immigrants back home, while Democrats want more money to deal with the problem. In 2008, Republicans in the house introduced a bill that would change a law that allowed illegal immigrant children that are not from Canada and Mexico to have a legal hearing. One of the main reasons the law was issued was to attempt to protect youth involved in sex trafficking. I believe that everyone should be able to have a chance to be heard, whether your from Canada, Mexico or where ever else.

  9. Republicans refuse to give minorities the upper hand, let alone welcome illegal immigrants into the U.S.. Minorities have been oppressed for decades while democrats offer people a shot at the "land of the free". Democrats want to create diversity and opportunities for everyone, legal or not while republicans want to block off all boarders .

  10. Republicans want nothing to do with illegal imigrants, even though they are saying that they will give hearnings if there not from canda or mexcio there is a small chance that they will stay in the united states. Democrates want more money so they can help illegal immigrants to stay so they can get a feel on how it is to live in the united states.

  11. Republicans want to continue to deport immigrants without any sympathy or hope for citizenship, while Democrats want to work with immigrants and help them gain citizenship. This is especially hard to gain funding for when 2/3 of the country supports immediate deportation.

  12. The government made the law of the sex trade but now the people are taking advantage of the law and the us dont know how to handle the people so they just dont care and they are just going to deport them.
